Packaging Waste Is a Serious Problem

Although the product waste problem tends to overshadow the packaging waste problem at a higher level, packaging waste is a severe problem and, in some ways, worse than the crisis created by the product waste.

Many packaging materials used today are made of polythene, derivatives of polythene and other fossil fuel by-products. Many of them, such as styrofoam and plastic wrap, are not recyclable, and the rest has low recyclability potential and can only be downcycled.

The unfortunate truth is packaging goes to waste at many levels of the supply chain – at the manufacturer, distributor, retailer, and customer. We can confidently say that almost all of it (even cardboard packaging) ends up in landfills or becomes pollutants.

Our Cardboard Boxes Are Reusable

Recycling is no longer sufficient. We must reuse as much of our waste as possible. Kola Project is in the process of transitioning to 100% reusable boxes. Until then, cardboard boxes are a necessary evil. However, we want to ask you to think twice before doing the easy thing: throwing cardboard boxes in the recycling after one use.

Because recycling is not as lovely as it seems, packaging systems use a significantly higher amount of water and fuel during production, disposal, and recycling than reusable packaging. Millions of perfect boxes are bailed, pulped and then made back into cardboard boxes, producing exactly what was started with.

Kola Project cardboard boxes can be reused up to six times before they are recycled. When you receive your Kola box, you’ll see a pre-paid return label with your order if it can be reusable. If there aren’t any return items, unfold the box, flatten it, tape it using the attached tape, paste the return label and drop it off at your nearest post office. You can also send us a message to schedule a collection.

There is absolutely no cost for you, and you generate less waste! This is going to be the start of a beautiful journey to fully circular shopping.

No Plastic Filling

We absolutely do not use any plastic package filling. Our products are packed minimally without any unnecessary filler materials, and when needed, we use protective filling made of Composta-Foam. Composta-Foam is the most environmentally sustainable and functional packaging material available. Made from corn and soy oil, Composta-Foam is certified compostable in the backyard and industrial facilities and can even be dissolved in a sink for safe and easy disposal. This unique material combines exceptional cushioning and thermal insulating protection while protecting the planet.

Water Based Tape

Did you know that glue-based tapes are hard, if not impossible, to recycle? Sometimes using tape with glue on a box can make the entire box impossible to recycle due to contamination. We use all-natural paper tape activated by water, removing any unnecessary synthetic adhesives from the packaging process and leaving our packages 100% recyclable at the end of their lives.

Soon, Our Boxes Will Be Fully Reusable

Soon we plan to say goodbye to cardboard boxes altogether and fully transition to reusable boxes. Our reusable boxes are made of recycled polyester and can be reused up to 40 times before being recycled into new boxes.
No longer will you have to lug massive piles of cardboard in your recycling bin that you will not get recycled anyway. For large items, we will simply unpack the item at your house and retrieve the packaging with us. For smaller items, once you recover your product, attach the pre-paid return shipping label to the box and drop it off at the nearest UPS.
