    Dimensions: - 9.5 × 9.5 cm

Ingredients / Materials: - 100% recycled waste LDPE plastic

Made from 100% recycled waste LDPE plastic in WEEZ & MERL Brighton & Hove studio. Each piece is crafted by hand and is totally unique in its marbling. Coaster is approximately 95mm x 5mm, with an outward-angled edge and the Weez & Merl logo features is debossed on the reverse. It has a smooth satin surface, usually with some minor surface irregularities. Please note that due to the nature of recycling used plastic, products may contain fabric fibres, splinters and the occasional piece of glitter, despite every effort being made to remove them. These come from the garments/products which the plastic bags originally contained when they were single-use packaging. Some coasters may have flecks of colours different from those seen in the photographs. The coasters in the gallery are ones we feel are a good representation of the batch, and please be aware they are unlikely to be the exact coasters you receive

  • Care Instruction

    All products are dishwasher safe.

Please be aware that metal scourers, or using any metal cutting implements on our products will damage the surface. The density of polyethene is similar to that of a hardwood such as Teak, so it will scratch and mark if care is not observed. Wooden and plastic utensils or cutting implements should not damage the surface but may still leave marks in certain lights, so we advise testing on an unseen area of the product before use.

Do not recommend exposure to temperatures exceeding 100° Celsius (212F). Temperatures higher than 150-160° Celsius (302-320F) will melt the plastic and cause irreparable damage. This includes hot pans – products should never be used as trivets.

    Design Story

Weez & Merl wants to challenge throwaway culture by showing how beautiful plastic can be.

Millions of tons of virgin LDPE are produced each year, and global demand is growing every year. Unfortunately, many applications of plastics are commonly regarded as disposable or for single use. Although LDPE is encouraged to be recycled on the label, it is often difficult to find facilities that do.

In the UK, massive amounts are shipped abroad to be recycled – an inefficient and unsustainable practice.

Originally transferring skills learned from the craft of woodworking, Weez & Merl have found many methods of working with recycled LDPE plastic by hand. Over the years, they have developed unique equipment to maximise LDPE’s potential.

To be completely waste-free, they remelt and reuse off-cuts, dust and planning curls created in the making processes.

Weez & Merl is a company designed around the circular economy concept and is trialling restoration, reparation and exchange schemes to support this vision of a future without waste. They believe that we can create truly sustainable products by making the most of LDPE’s ability to be endlessly remelted and repurposed.
