Ali and Alex founded Nkuku after a road trip through Africa and India in 2002. From the outset, they were inspired and humbled by the artisans they met and felt there was something they could do to work and support the artisans and provide a business opportunity for themselves. Their passion for the environment and fair-trade practices and an interest in traditional crafts and interiors combined to form the basis for Nkuku.
Nkuku works with independent businesses, social projects and co-operatives with a focus on building strong business relationships with all of their suppliers so that they can work together towards mutual success. Their primary focus is transparency; they see the suppliers more as partners and encourage open dialogue and communication.
They work with natural and recycled materials with a focus on sustainable production methods, which shapes their collections. They keep air freight to a minimum and review our packaging regularly. They are constantly evaluating our processes and looking at ways we can improve. Many of their products are handmade from recycled materials. They gather the waste leftover from other industries, including; cotton from discarded t-shirts, leather, metals and glass, and recycled saris. Recycling allows them to create new and beautiful products with less impact on our environment.
The relationship between an artisan and a beautiful handmade piece creates a story, making each product, not a mass-market item but an individually crafted piece. The traditional skills used by their suppliers have been handed down from generation to generation.
